New issue 472604 by ***@donauwert.com: Bluetooth mouse (Apple magic
mouse) stops working after 2-3 minutes of use
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=472604

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; CrOS x86_64 6812.52.0) AppleWebKit/537.36
(KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/42.0.2311.60 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. connect Apple bluetooth mouse to Chromebook (Asus C200MA)
2. connection succesful, mouse works
3. after some minutes, the mouse pointer stands still -> mouse does not
work -> using trackpad mouse works well

What is the expected behavior?
Bluetooth mouse should work.
I can reproduce this with stable channel and beta channel software. i
haven't tried other bluetooth mouses though

What went wrong?
i can provide debug info if you tell me how

Did this work before? N/A

Chrome version: 42.0.2311.60 Channel: beta

I tried this on squawks, but could not repo it there. I found similar issue
on other chromebook and attached is hci dump for the same.

There is a connection time out. If we restart the device (apple BT mouse),
it connects.

Steps to repo:

1. Connect Apple BT mouse. Connection successful.
2. BT mouse works fine.
3. Suspend the chromebook.
4. Try to wake the chromebook using Apple BT mouse.
5. Chromebook doesnt wake up. But there is activity in btmon.
6 Use touchpad/keybaord to wake it up.
7. Chromebook wakes up and we can see activity on btmon and cursor does not
move.
8. Observe the log and we can see disconnect/connect.
9. Try couple of times and after some time, BT mouse starts working.
10. However, initially after wake up, BT mouse does not respond and we can
see connection issues.

Today I tried to pair/connect Apple Mouse and it does not connect. I
enabled debug logs for bluetoothd process and attached the same for
reference.

I'm getting this issue too, and possibly related, also on the Apple Magic
Trackpad.

It's my first time reporting an issue with CrOS - how can I provide useful
information like a log dump?

Apologies for the repeat post, but is there anything I can do to help move
this issue along? I'm really keen to help out.

It's causing me significant issues and I'm sure many other users have the
same problems given the popularity of Apple hardware.

For the original poster and anyone else suffering the same issue I'm
finding it much reduced and generally smoother performance from the Magic
Mouse after switching from stable -> dev channel.

I'm still experiencing sporadic connection drops, but as far as I can see
they're less frequent and less severe. Highly subjective and hard for me to
quantify, but the mouse movement feels less jumpy, and scrolling in
particular feels smoother.

If someone tells me how to provide more useful information I'd be more than
happy to, but here's my current version:

Comment #8 on issue 472604 by ***@gmail.com: Bluetooth mouse (Apple

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=472604

To clarify, the issues are definitely not resolved in 45.0.2439.3, but they
do seem to have reduced in frequency. I'm still getting connection drops at
least 3-4 times per hour, which is on the edge of what's usable for my use
case, but would certainly not be usable for many people.

I have an Apple Wireless Keyboard, Magic Mouse and Wireless Trackpad and
the connection drops happen on all three devices. Additionally if I connect
the mouse and trackpad simultaneously only one will work correctly while
the other will perform very sluggishly with extensive lag, as if they
are "competing" for the same channel.

I have other bluetooth devices which exhibit none of these connection
problems (e.g. a Bose Soundlink Mini II), and have also tried a colleague's
bluetooth mouse which appeared to work perfectly. I've done various
combination tests of devices and it doesn't seem to matter how many devices
are connected except the previously mentioned trackpad / mouse conflict.
I've also tried changing the physical configuration of my setup (to rule
out interference) but nothing I've tried has worked either.

Can I ask if this has been diagnosed and whether a potential fix is coming
up? I understand there will be competing priorities and don't mind waiting
for a solution, but if this issue is going to hang around for months I'll
probably simply replace the hardware as the current situation is not ideal.

@ethan - I'm not so familiar with the Chromium release path, but am I
reading those links correctly that the patches arrived in version 44.7077?

As mentioned in #6 I'm on Version 45.0.2439.3 (dev) and am still getting
serious issues.

Forgive me if I'm misunderstanding the release notes, and please let me
know if there's any additional information I can provide to help.

I just connected the Apple Bluetooth mouse again to an Asus C200M
chromebook running

Version 45.0.2439.4 dev (64-bit)
Plattform 7204.1.0 (Official Build) dev-channel squawks

As reported earlier by Jamie, the connection drops for me also persist.
However, something has changed for the better, with ChromeOS Version 42 the
connection dropped after about 2-3 minutes, now less often after about
10-15 minutes.

Thanks for investigating this issue.

Comment #16 on issue 472604 by ***@gmail.com: Bluetooth mouse
(Apple magic mouse) stops working after 2-3 minutes of use
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=472604

As a developer I completely understand that supporting Apple's proprietary
hardware puts a strain on resources, but as a user I think the community
needs to do more to make it clear what is and isn't supported. I'm a huge
chromebook fan and advocate, in large part because they're the one
computing device I can give to any family member and be confident it
will "just work" within reasonable parameters.

When researching before purchase the best "official" source I could find
was https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/2587653. I understand why
it's difficult to make this exhaustive but if a popular device has known
limitations and isn't supported then it would be good to signpost this to
users. My next step was googling "magic mouse chromebook" where the top
thread
(http://www.reddit.com/r/chromeos/comments/2naune/will_the_apple_magic_mouse_work_on_a_chromebook/)
and many others include chromium developers saying it works fine. My
general impression was that this was a low risk choice.

Is there a list of officially supported (or at least user tested) devices?
The ubuntu community do this pretty well
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport). Please don't read this as
criticism - I'm truly very grateful of everyone's hard work and think CrOS
is the best linux for desktop experience currently available, I'd just like
to encourage this information to be spread widely to help other users.

To clarify - should I be looking for alternative hardware? If this is a
won't fix issue I'll happily switch, but if not I'd love to help out.

Comment #20 on issue 472604 by ***@gmail.com: Bluetooth mouse
(Apple magic mouse) stops working after 2-3 minutes of use
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=472604

I definitely spoke too soon - after a day or two the connection drops are
back to every 5-10 minutes. I'm not sure if I was just lucky on the first
day or there's some memory effect. To test the latter theory I've tried
doing some full restarts, but that doesn't seem to make any difference.

What information can I provide to help diagnose the problem?

Hey, I was having the same problem with my wireless Apple keyboard
(miserable connection drop-outs). 45.0.2454.15 beta seems to have fixed it
for the moment.

@JodiJohn - which device are you on? Are you using a wireless keyboard and
mouse / trackpad? In my case it seems that at least the trackpad and mouse
are interfering with each other.

I'm also on 45.0.2454.15 beta (on a pixel 2015) and unfortunately still
having the same issues :(

I can confirm this is still a problem and none of the updates since my last
post have helped. I'm currently on:

Version 46.0.2490.42 beta (64-bit)
Platform 7390.37.0 (Official Build) beta-channel samus
Firmware Google_Samus.6300.141.0

Exactly the same issues as before :-(

Same problem here on a Samsung Chromebook 2 and Apple Magic Mouse and Apple
Wireless Keyboard. I've started using this device once again this past
week, after having parked it at my mother-in-laws for a year or so. She
uses a wired mouse. I find the behavior of these bluetooth devices
atrocious. This was certainly not the case a year ago, when all bluetooth
connected devices were fine. Also, these are known good bluetooth devices
that work fine on other systems. The bluetooth problem has emerged as a big
problem, and again, was not the case a year ago (though there was a bit of
trouble on pairing, it never dropped connections repeatedly every 10-20
minutes). So, while it would be comforting to say the device isn't
supported, the point here is that the problem has emerged over time, rather
than being there in the beginning. The hardware peripheral bluetooth
devices haven't changed but the ability of Chromebook to support them has
indeed, for the worse. The idea that I now need to buy a wired
keyboard/mouse to have the functionality I did a year ago is disturbing.

Joseph, could you take a look at this? Pramod will help repro to see if
this is still an issue.

Still have this problem with Apple Magic Mouse and also Apple Bluetooth
Keyboard on a Samsung Chromebook 2 with latest production build.

The mouse cuts out regularly, and also the keyboard sometimes.

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=472604

I connected both Apple magic mouse and magic keyboard to a Samus with a
pretty new image:

CHROMEOS_RELEASE_DESCRIPTION=7828.0.0 (Official Build) dev-channel samus
test

I could observe the disconnection problem with such a set up. In short, it
looks that Intel Wireless 7260 disconnected with some unknown reason and
caused the keyboard and mouse to disconnect. I observed Intel 7260
disconnection twice in my experiments. At the first time, the magic mouse
failed to reconnect. At the second time, the magic mouse was able to
reconnect. On the other hand, the magic keyboard was able to reconnect both
times. This was consistent with the observation in comments above that the
magic keyboard is more stable than the magic mouse.

Hi, Jian, I suspect that there still exists some firmware issues in Intel's
controller and need their support to further debugging this issue. Do you
have Intel's contact window regarding this issue?

The behavior could be seen in the attached file of /var/log/messages and a
snippet was posted here:

Hi Ethan, does the DUT connect to both magic mouse and magic keyboard? In
my case, the disconnection only occurred when both peripherals are
connected. If only a magic mouse is connected, it works fine for me too.

And please also check /var/log/messages for any disconnection messages. It
is also possible that the devices re-connect after disconnection.

Thanks for looking into this.

Have been watching the thread because I have the same issue and wanted to
add that its not just limited to apple mice. I have several bluetooth mice:
microsoft, logitech. All exhibit this issue. After a period of time using
the mice it will just stop and take about a minute to start moving again.
The symptoms are exactly that of a disconnection and reconnection. One
thing that happens with mine is after about 5 times of this issue happening
the bluetooth gui (omni and settings checkbox) is not functional. I can go
in and try to disable/uncheck bluetooth but the setting does not stick.
Bluetooth stays enabled. I have to shutdown and restart then can disable
bluetooth. Is this a possible driver issue? Firmware?

Hi,

i just updated to the lastest dev channel version 50.0.2651.0 on an Asus
C200M and tried again.
For me the behaviour is still the same, i.e. magic mouse stops working
after around 2 minutes (as desribed in comment #1). what i noticed today,
not only the mouse disconnects, but it also says "bluetooth deactivated"
(in the small menu you can reach by clicking on the time; i did not
deactivate bluetooth manually). i think in previous versions of ChromeOS
bluetooth remained turned on (but i'm not completely sure).

Thanks Chromium-Team and Ethan from Intel that you have been continuiung to
look into that issue!
