My area is more install UI and external (sideloaded) installations, which
doesn't come close to this. There might be some overlap for Antony (and
mek), given they are owners for App installation.

The issue occurs regardless of whether the install is done silently,

Look, I understand that you guys are busy and that most of you are just
putting in your own time on this stuff, but the least you could do is be
upfront and honest with me. If you say you're going to triage it on a
specific day, don't just blow past it. It's been three weeks since the last
update. This isn't even about fixing bugs at this point; it's about being
honest with your users and being professional. This bug has been around for
years. I would really appreciate some traction on this.

#1 is correct in guessing that Chrome (specifically the CRX unpacker) does
not like junction points. This behavior is intentional however (see
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/codesearch#chromium/src/chrome/browser/extensions/sandboxed_unpacker.cc&l=170).

I don't know the historical context behind it but I assume it's related to
security. +meacer, thoughts?

We should revisit whether or not this restriction is necessary, as it
sounds like a terrible experience for a reasonable use case.

I've just tested the --no-sandbox extension and I can't install
extensions. "COULD_NOT_GET_TEMP_DIRECTORY".
I'm using RDS User Profile Disks.

At this time, we won't be enabling extension installs (through the normal
channel) when using dynamic disks or RDS User Profile disks. We hope the
workaround posted by mr.chris.osburn in #30 can help affected users install
the extensions they want when on these systems.

While it's nice that there is a workaround, that process simply does not
work when you have thousands of users. There is no way to reasonably roll
out 5+ extensions manually across that many users. We will be moving away
from Chrome.

Thank you for looking into to this. I can confirm that we are experiencing
the exact same issue. I am in the final stages of testing an RDS Farm for
50 users with two session hosts and User Profile Disks. We have all of the
kinks worked out and are experiencing no software issues related to UPD's
except the inability to install Chrome Extensions. Normally I would
say "so what" but unfortunately this is a really big deal for this customer.

The technical details of this are that the extension unpacker process runs
sandboxed - this is because there have been a history of vulnerabilities in
zlib (our compression library) (example - issue 341955) so to protect users
from these, we sandbox the process. Sandboxed processes can only access
local filesystems (not junction points) - this is because (again) there is
a history of vulnerabilities that exploit NTFS junction points (example -
issue 352429).

On systems using UPD there is no writable location for a normal privileged
user to perform this extension unpack, outside the junction mounted user
profile from the UPD.

One solution to this is to change the server settings so Local
(%APPDATALOCAL%) and LocalLow are mounted locally rather than via the UPD.

This is quite easy to do - you go to Server Manager -> Remote Desktop
Services -> Your Collection -> Tasks -> Edit Properties -> User Profile
Disks -> and change it from "Store all user settings and data on the user
profile disk" to "Store only the following folders on the user profile
disk". This means Local data ends up stored locally. I have tested this
and it allows extension install. I've attached a screenshot of the menu.

Other options require weakening sandbox security, or adding safe support
for junction point whitelisting into the sandbox policy engine, and are
likely to be harder to implement.

I'd appreciate feedback on whether the solution of moving Local and
LocalLow to a local disk would be sufficient here?

Understood that you want the Google data to roam with the user via UPD, but
you can work around the issue in #39 by adding AppData\Local\Google to
the "include the following folders" option in UPD - see attached screenshot.

I've tested this, and I can still install extensions, and the Google
profile is located symlinked to the UPD.

Also have multiple rds farm with chrome running on them. Need to ditribute

Here is a perfect scenario where this fix fails. Windows Server: 2003 &
2012, you setup up two drives in windows disk management, make them dynamic
and mirror them, there is no other drives in the system. Your workaround or
fix will still fail since its looking for a psychical local disk. At this
point the same error would occur, which is where my dilema has moved my RDS
capabilities to look elsewhere.

You are correct, of course, that is an issue that needed to be fixed years
ago now, but your scenario can be simplified to "make them dynamic".

For some reason, they've decided to look at a very low level of definition
of a fixed drive and a dynamic drive is not fixed -- seemingly end of
story. Thy shalt not use Microsoft recommended techniques.
