I am encountering the same issue. I see a grey screen when i click on the
link which redirect to .pdf file. We usually send drug information in .pdf
which is important to Doctors. Can you please tell me, what is the status
on this issue?

Similar problem for me. As of earlier this week when loading pdfs in
chrome the screen would go dark gray and no pdf would show. I was using
the Foxit reader plug in at the time. I downloaded a new version of adobe
reader and disabled the Foxit reader plugin in Chrome. Using Adobe reader
I would still get a dark gray screen when loading PDFs. I disabled Adobe
Reader and enabled Chrome's PDF reader and that worked for displaying PDFs,
but I don't like Chrome's reader is missing some features I need to do my
job.
I reenabled Adobe reader and opened a link to a pdf and got the same gray
screen. Then I right clicked, selected "Inspect Element" and my PDF
immediately appeared. I tried reenabling foxit reader and the same thing
happened. Gray screen when opening a pdf, but the pdf appearing when I
select "inspect element".
Chrome version 32.0.1700.76 m
Window 7 Professional 64.

I've been having the same problem with Adobe Reader plugin just showing a
blk/grey screen. Sure there are workarounds like inspect element and
holding the shift key when clicking on the pdf file, but, this is a real
pain. I'm using Chrome 32.0.1700.76m and Windows Vista 32. When are you
going to fix this problem?

This bug is specifically about a PDF that doesn't display correctly in
Chrome's PDF plugin. If you are having problems with third-party plugins in
Chrome, please file a new bug.

I had the same problem. It recalled it started immediately after the latest
update to Adobe Reader. I got a totally black page when opening a PDF with
Chrome built-in PDF viewer. I tried disabling the plugin and using Adobe
plug-in instead, and this produced a PDF correctly, but through the Adobe
plugin, of course. I obviously assumed it was a Chrome issue at first, but
then I uninstalled Adobe Reader altogether and then the built-in Chrome PDF
viewer came back to life.

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=333918

I also have the exact same problem. I have no plugins installed. I used to
use Chrome exclusively to view my pdfs. Now, I cannot view pdfs. Clicking
a .pdf link or opening a pdf attachment from Gmail now gives me a plain
black screen (the content of the tab renders black). If at that point I
resize/maximize Chrome, the content of the tab renders plain grey instead,
but still not content.

According to this thread, I should report this.
http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/chrome/uAWgIZZb01g/8Y4miriOXy8J

I don't know what additional details you need from me. For what it's
worth, I am also regularly experiencing this other issue as well, which
doesn't seem to be solved but has a few ad-hoc workarounds that seem to
help. Maybe they are related, you can tell me.
https://productforums.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/chrome/SDxfzn8QG_Y

However, to the extent that there seems to be a workaround for one issue
('try turning off threaded compositing') which conflicts with a workaround
for a similar issue, see below ('try turning on threaded compositing'),
makes me think there is more to this than meets the eye.

I've had the same problem. The way I can open the .pdf is go to chrome
settings, click on the word "extension" and the .pdf appears. Close the
tab and done.

Please fix this problem.

It's annoying this still hasn't been fixed.

One workaround is to right click the PDF link and select "open in new
window". The PDF will display properly if you do that, but depending on
how the link is formed, that isn't always a viable option.

Same here on Windows 8.1. Link opens to a blank, black page. If I maximize
and then reduce Chrome it will display. If I right click and choose open in
new window it displays. However, if I right click and choose open in new
tab the problem persists.

Exact same experience as #26. I have Chrome 32.0.1700.107 m with Windows
7. Most of my grad students submit their work as PDFs so I've had to
switch to Firefox which loads and displays PDF files flawlessly. DePaul
University in Chicago has advised faculty and students to use Firefox with
the University's online course creator called "Desire to Learn" -- a
software program used by many universities. The latest version of Chrome
is far from 100% compatible with this program.

I'm having the same problem. The adobe plugin produces a grey screen when
trying to load a .pdf. The Chrome plugin works OK.

Chrome version Version 32.0.1700.107 m; Windows 8.1.

I can reproduce the original problem using the PDF in the original post on
peppy. I don't have any additional PDF plugins installed. The PDF opens
normally if I right click and choose save as, and then open the PDF from
the file manager. When I click on the link, I get a grey screen. The
loading icon shows up in the lower left hand corner, but it appears static
(see screen shot. The icon is static just like in the screen shot. No
animation)

Version 33.0.1750.154 m: This issue began impacting my work area today,
Human Resources forms at CSU, Chico. Our only option is to recommend users
move to a different browser. It is not feasible to explain a work-around to
thousands of end users. I am personally disheartened to direct people away
from Chrome. It was my favorite browser, but it is impossible to function
with this issue in our environment.

I embed PDF files inside HTML pages. Some files were not visible in Chrome.
I could fix this in our site by changing the headers sent with the PDF file.
Without a content-disposition header the PDF is visible.

The original reporter filed this bug for
http://www.caeb.uscourts.gov/documents/Forms/EDC/EDC.002-040.pdf and that
is the same as bug 345857 - The content-type returned by the web server
is "*", rather than something proper like application/pdf.

For everyone else who chimed in on this issue, either post a publicly
accessible URL for the PDF you cannot load, and I can help you determine if
you are facing this bug or something else.

If you have some other rendering issue, or if you have PDFs that cannot
load off your local hard drive, or anything else, file a new bug. This is
not the bug you are looking for.

In "Windows 32-bit 37.0.2062.102 m" it was broken, but a flags reset fixed
it. I'm seeing if I can track down the offending flag. I'll post here if I
find anything. I guess this is a warning to anyone who ignores the "your

We are having the same issue. This happens when the PDF files have images
embedded into the PDF. Any standard text in PDF is showing up correctly,
but the images show as blank in the PDF file. This seems to be an issue
for atleast 9 months.

Lei, can you PTAL at the PDF in #56? This doesn't load for me in canary or
dev channel either.

The problem in comment 56 may be a different issue. All the problems have
the same symptom, but the underlying causes are different.

If one downloads 140927ArenaTrial.pdf and then open the local copy, it
works fine. It's some kind of a networking issue. With a debug build, we
get:

I'm seeing the same blank screen trying to view documents served from our
website. I can reproduce this on "39.0.2171.95 m" and "41.0.2264.2 canary".
I've included an example below.

Comment #66 on issue 333918 by ***@eis-inc.com: PDF's not displaying
with Chromes PDF Distiller
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=333918

I have a twist for you...but, since I get the same grey screen as #65 does
full screen in our <object>, I think they may be related.

We provide PDFs to our users via <object> and it appears that SOME of them
are not displaying in Chrome, but work fine in IE. Specifically, those
from one source...so I suspect it is an issue with their PDF creation, but
need help determining the best fix. (ask them to recreate their whole PDF
library??? YIKES!!)

The issue for us is that Chrome 'thinks' it is displaying the file and if
you right click the area you get the Save As option and the correct file
can be saved.

Trouble is, that the PDF doesn't actually display but because
Chrome 'thinks' it is, the fallback option for the <object> tag to
alternately display a link to the PDF doesn't display EITHER.

Q1) Chrome version (40.0.2214.115 m)
Q2) Do you have Adobe Reader installed? (yes)
Q3) Do all PDFs show up with the gray screen? (no)
Q3a) If the answer to Q3 is "no", then what URLs do not load for you?

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=333918

I'm pretty surprised this is still an issue. I'm running 41.0.2272.76 m on
Win7 and continue to see this problem. When trying to open the example I
previously provided I'm getting the following error in the console:

net::ERR_RESPONSE_HEADERS_MULTIPLE_CONTENT_LENGTH

Other documents like the following open fine, though:

http://www.grra.com/uploads/documents/puppy-adoption-form.pdf

There's another issue that seems related and has been open for about as
long:

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=345857

I'm really hoping a fix is near, as it's becoming difficult to recommend
Chrome to non-technical folks when a basic action like opening a PDF file
isn't consistently successful.

I have the same problem with Crystal Reports that create .PDFs. The PDF
starts to download but never finishes. I had to tell my clients to only use
IE as that browser is able to display the Crystal Reports that are
generated by my web applications.

Re comment #67: See comment 59. There's not much we can do if the server
(or proxies in the middle) sends two conflicting content-length headers.

I'm unclear why the message is displayed in the console. The response for
the following document only shows a single Content-Length header in both
Chrome and Fiddler.

http://www.grra.com/uploads/documents/adoption-certificate.pdf

I also tried the link in comment 56 and saw a single Content-Length header
and the document failed to open. Does anyone else see two Content-Length
headers?

For what it's worth, here's another issue in Assigned status that's been
open for more than a year and seems related.

Internal PDF distiller does not opens PDF file. Only grey tab is visible.
When I disable the PDF distiller then the PDF is downloaded and can be
opened with Chrome without any issue. Any other PDF viewer works also.

The PDF generation and display is working on Safari, Firefox, Chrome Canary
without any problems!
