Example URL:
Various (but not all) HTTPS sites including facebook.com

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Attempt to connect to a HTTPS website such as facebook.com
2. Sometimes it will hang with "establishing secure connection" for up to
60 seconds before timing out or finally loading.
3. If it times out, a refresh usually results in the site loading
immediately.

What is the expected behavior?
The site should load immediately without delaying on "establishing secure
connection..."

What went wrong?
The site does not always connect immediately and hangs. This happens on
several computers and internet connections and when using different Chrome
profiles. I can't see anything that links the issue to a specific component
such as anti-virus etc. This happens even with all browser plugins disabled
and is getting more frequent. I have also tried doing a full cache clear
but the problem persists.

Did this work before? Yes This started to occur around 6 months ago and got
more frequent

Does this work in other browsers? Yes

Chrome version: 43.0.2357.124 Channel: stable
OS Version: 6.1 (Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2)
Flash Version: Shockwave Flash 18.0 r0

This issue is getting increasingly frustrating now that more sites are
becoming HTTPS only. I'm very close to switching browsers but I'd rather
not do that given everything else about Chromium that is good. I'll do
everything I can do aid in its resolution.

Tested the issue on windows 7, Linux Ubuntu 14.04 and Mac 10.10.3 using
chrome latest stable 43.0.2357.130 with the below steps

1.Go to Facebook.com
2.Logged in without any dealy or hang issues

Unable to reproduce the issue.Requesting you please try to upgrade the
chrome to latest stable 43.0.2357.130 and check the issue.Please update the
thread if the issue still persists.will help you in further triaging.

Currently using 43.0.2357.130 and the issue persists. Occurs on multiple
machines with and without synced profiles. This includes 2x Windows Server
2008 R2 machines and 3x Windows 7 x64 Professional.

The issue does not occur on every load of a secure site, usually the first
after being idle for a while. Once loaded it works fine for a short time
until the site is not used for a short while again.

I can provide more dumps if required.

I too experience similar problems. It tends to be Facebook only where I
have the problem. Chrome Version 43.0.2357.124 m - Windows 7 x64
Professional. I have it on my work PC and home PC, both running similar
setups.
The problem happens intermittently about 50% of the time.

I, too, experience the same issue on OS X 10.9.5 usng Chrome 43.0.2357.130
(64-bit).

My net event log is attached.

Everything was fine until about Wed or Thurs last week.

@terry.dunlap (c#7): There's something weird about your net-internals file;
it doesn't show any events. Maybe worth retrying?

@abyssundergorund (c#2): I took a look at your net-internals dump and
looking at the waterfall the requests that are taking a long time and
eventually failing are css requests to an akamai server that show up as
having been dispatched by an ad-block extension. Could you try disabling
ad-block and seeing if this issue persists?

Hi, the issue persists on occasion (same frequency) on a fresh install with
no extensions installed and not synced with a gmail account. I've tried
this on 2 of my windows servers too which are rarely used for any web
browsing, and it happens on them as well.

@terry.dunlap: Digging into the net-internals dump, it appears that the
certificate verification on the request is taking a long time. We delegate
certificate verification to the OS, so it's out of our hands (though it
does bring up the interesting question as to whether Safari behaves the
same way--you might want to check that).

Given that your dump involves certificate verification and hence the OS,
it's very likely that your problem isn't the same as that of the OP (who's
on Windows when you're on Mac). Which is good for them, but less good for
you :-J. Sorry I don't have anything more useful to tell you.

Details in case they're relevant for some future purpose:
* 43.0.2357.130, Mac OS X 10.9.5 (from UA string)
* Earliest timed out URL_REQUEST from waterfall view is 96. It's waiting
on an HTTP_STREAM_REQUEST.
* HTTP_STREAM_JOB started at same time as above was waiting on the request
is 99. It's dependent on CONNECT_JOB 86, which uses CONNECT_JOB 87 for the
transport socket, and is dependent on socket 93, which receives a
certificate and then depends on CERT_VERIFIER_JOB 95.
* CERT_VERIFIER_JOB 95 is dispatched at t 4347 and returns with a
successful certificate at t 35582. This is after the connect job has timed
out at t 34331.

Here is another log with Adblock off where the page hangs on establishing
secure connection. Eventually CSS fails to load and several refreshes are
needed to get the page to load.

It doesn't look like terry.dunlap and abyssunderground have the same issue;
CERT_VERIFIER_JOB isn't the one hanging. Let's use this bug for

Everything that hangs seems to be an HTTP/2 or SPDY site, which is
consistent with the original report that it affects some but not all https
URLs.

Where we're similarly stuck waiting on something. Unfortunately, the
original socket seems to be missing, so I can't see the actal reads and I
have no idea what HTTP2_STREAM_UPDATE_RECV_WINDOW corresponds to.



abyssunderground: Is it reproducible enough that you could capture a log
where you:
1. Restart your browser
2. Open about:net-internals *before* visiting Facebook.
3. Reproduce the bug and export the log.

I want to look at the start of these sessions, but they all happened before
net-internals was opened.

Oh, you mentioned anti-virus in the original report. To confirm, does this
happen if you disable your anti-virus? A lot of times they'll cause
problems with networking.

I've been trying to capture it for a while but it's becoming less frequent
it seems, perhaps with a recent update? I'll continue to keep trying to
capture it but there doesn't seem to be a reproducible set of steps to do
so.

Thanks for the logs! Both the attachments to #26 and #27 show the same
issue.

Looks nothing response to our TLS 1.3 handshake when trying to talk to
fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net, and then something times out the connection after
~10 seconds. We try TLS 1.2 and then TLS 1.1, but both those just get very
fast RSTs. Connections to all other domains work, including TLS 1.3
connections to fbcdn-profile-a.akamaihd.net. The log in #27 also has some
successfully connection attempts to fbstatic-a.akamaihd.net. We even see
successful and unsuccessful connection attempts to the same IP.

It's odd that this hasn't been reported by more people when it happens most
often for me on Facebook. It could quite easily be any site that uses
akamaihd.net too and not specifically Facebook so I'll try and look out for
that. Next time it happens on another site I'll see if that site also uses
akamaihd.net as it's CDN.

Windows Control Panel -> Internet Options -> "Content" Tab -> Certificates
Button.

There's a few tabs that can get polluted, mainly "Personal" but
Intermediate and Trusted Root can too.

Sort the tab by 'Expiration Date' and highlight the certificates you would
like removed and click "Remove" or press delete.

Hi David (***@chromium.org)!

I fixed the problem...

I switched to Slimjet!

I have to say that I feel like I'm using Chrome 32 again.

No problems. No crashing. No memory leak. No "Establishing Secure
Connection" freezes.

I feel like in browser heaven right now -- especially since this proves
that my problem with Chrome has very little to do with the age of the
computer that I'm using right now.

So, I'm not going to file a separate bug report. I'll leave that to you. I
can tell you that the memory leak with Chrome and high memory usage, which
I could see when comparing the information for both browsers, is likely the
reason why the freezing is happening during the Establishing Secure
Connection (too many resources being tapped at once).

Unable to reproduce the above issue on windows with chrome stable
version '46.0.2490.80'.

I don't seem to have encountered this for a while since recent updates.
Looks like it might be resolved. Will continue to monitor and post back if
it repeats.
