I just did a re-install of Windows 8. I am not touching the Windows 8.1
upgrade.

I erased the contents on my boot drive (Solid State Drive) twice with
different programs.

The problem occurred again after Windows 8 install on Google Chrome Version
32.0.1700.107 m. I was using the beta or dev version as it happened many
times before on that.

It could be the Solid State Drive (SSD). Latest firmware.

surface tests on the drive that said the SSD was running GOOD.

Anyway, I do not know what's going on.

Hello, I would like to confirm this issue. The symptoms are exactly the
same, with the exception that the whole system does not hang. However, I
got 4-core CPU and chrome hogs up one whole core when tab basically hangs
and "Waiting for cache..." appears.

I checked out histograms that ***@chromium.org pointed out. As I
understand from data below I got quite a lot samples where cache response
time exceeded 1 second. Below is the excerpt.

Histogram: ThreadWatcher.ResponseTime.CACHE recorded 8272 samples, average

Thanks.

It doesn't sound like you two are having exactly the same issue. At least I
would not expect the original reporter to have one core spinning while the
delay is happening.

Note that the histogram from comment 33 has at least 6.6% of samples taking
more than one second, while comment 27 has 0.12% taking more than 20ms.

But sure, it's not working as it should either. log?

I wonder if their is an issue with Adobe Flash player.

I finally managed to change the location of the browser to my second
hard-drive to see if that might fix anything.

In the past 24 hours, I receive a new error when my browser
hangs..."Waiting for Available socket".

I'll try to get a log.

I had a feeling that uninstalling the extensions would do the trick.
However, I did not wish to use the browser without Ad-Block Plus. I only
have 2 extensions running including Ad-Block Plus. I am sure Ad-Block Plus
is the culprit for causing the issue on my end.

I have read that their were only 2 ways. The easy way I had read did not
work. However, I managed to find another easy way after reading Cnet
website that has an article on erasing SSD's completely.

Well I decided to download a partition software (partedmagic) to secure
erase my SSD. The latest release of the software allowed me to complete it.

All hard-drives are in "frozen or freeze mode" which you have to let the
drives sleep, and thus perform a secure erase. It wipes the drive clean and
allows it to return to default settings.

I will see if it works.

It clearly is a Chrome issue, so people who are reading this - don't
reinstalling your OS you're wasting your time.

This is happening daily for me now, even clearing cache does not fix it.
Googling the issue, seems a lot of people are having this problem
exclusively for Chrome.

For me its such a pain that it has driven me to use another browser until
Chrome can fix it.

I had this problem (on Windows 7) and got it to go away by uninstalling
Chrome, deleting any user-specific directories Chrome had created (e.g.,
profile, cache, ...), and then reinstalling Chrome. As to why the
uninstall didn't remove the user-specific directories -- the uninstall
actually failed (possibly due to this issue -- Chrome was running very
slowly).
Has anyone else tried this?

I have the exact same bug. Windows 7 64-bit, Microsoft Security Essentials
installed.

1. I go to this page: http://sip.ztm.kielce.pl/
2. Loading stops on "waiting for cache". Every new tab stops loading as
well with the same status.

When I disable protection in MSE the page loads normally.

Okay, im having the same issue in all the instances that i use chrome (and
chromium for pokki).

Waiting for cache and nothing opens, even settings. Clear the cache, when
the browser respond, doesnt work. Uninstall and reinstall either. Internet
conection is fine, low ping, good download and upload speed.

My OS is Windows 8, not upgraded to 8.1.

Internet explorer Works without any issue, i can surf the web normaly, is
just a chrome issue.

Any solution for this? Or i will have to quit using chrome?

Chrome Canary and Chrome Stable
Win 8.1 Update
128GB SSD
All drives updated, etc.
Re-installed windows - twice.
Deleted Chrome Profile
mapped various folders to other HDD's

It freezes the page, then chrome, then the entire machine.
Sometimes it is fine for days, other times It'll happen every few minutes.

I have a net-internals and histogram log if interested, but not sure if
those are safe to post as-is without cutting out info. (noob)

This should not be related with freezing Chrome or the whole machine.
Troubleshooting machine hangs is complicated, but
http://www.chromium.org/for-testers/bug-reporting-guidelines/hanging-tabs
may help you with process hangs. For machine wide issues, something like
resource manager (from Window's task manager) may help.

As for the logs, there should not be anything sensitive on the histograms.
Net-internals will tell which sites you have visited since the log was
enabled, but that should be pretty much it for a default log (we attempt to
strip sensitive information, like cookies). You can send me the files
directly if you're more comfortable doing that.

I use Google Chrome on my home and work PCs (both win7) and Chromium on
laptop (linux). I witnessed this problem only on my home PC. I only
witnessed hangs with facebook/9gag pages left open for several days. All of
the sudden opening new tab displays "waiting for cache..." message and
pages do not get loaded.
I now tried to restart chrome by quiting and few chrome processes kept
running for several minutes (one with ~300MB memory usage and 25% CPU
(according to taskmgr), it's a 4 core 4 thread CPU) and died while I was
writing this. Ramdisk use dropped by several hundred MB.
Restarting browser after all processes died seemingly fixed the problem.

I now have 36.0.1985.143, but this problem was manifesting for several
versions back.

I have been getting the hang also for several versions. I am on Version
36.0.1985.143 m. Mine says "waiting for appcache" rather than just cache
(don't know if that is a relevant distinction or not). I am using Windows 7
64 bit and have Chrome, FF, and IE installed. This happens only in Chrome
and has been going on for months. Generally the delay is in the 30 to 60
second window of time. For now, until this is fixed, I have stopped using
Chrome and am using IE. Would love if this could get some attention and get
fixed.

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=336734

I too have been seeing this issue for the last couple of days. I have an I7
system with high speed disks and 16 G of memory. I have added nothing and
have changed nothing. All of a sudden I started seeing these long waiting
for cache messages at the bottom of Chrome and the web sites take forever
to get going with virtually every link in the website running into waiting
for cache. I did speed checks and though that site also loaded slow due to
same, the speed and response from my ISP and the speed test site came back
as full speed.

I KNOW this is a Chrome issue and if it isn't fixed soon I'm back to IE.

I use chrome day in and day out at work with really heavy web apps and
chrome works great on over 30 computers for 30 people all the time.

I have this issue only at home. It has to be a conflict with some other
software or OS version. I just wasted 10 min reading this thread and
another 20 looking for an answer else ware.

Firefox does it too.

re comment#87: That's an interesting case. How much memory on the laptop?
You can use Chrome's built-in task manager (shift-esc) to see how much
memory is used by chrome processes (more specific that OS tools, but that's
also fine). Maybe something shows up there before the system becomes
unusable?

In general, if there's heavy paging everything becomes painfully slow
(especially disk related code), so that could explain it.

When the issue happens for me it seems to clog the event queue... nothing
on the system responds until the "waiting for cache" ends (email client,
other browsers, etc.). Once the message clears, which usually takes 30-60
seconds, the system is back to normal.

It happens most frequently on heavy content pages (usually with lots of
images). I haven't actually seen the issue in 2 weeks or so.

Windows 7, SP 1, all updates applied.

No SDD here. I have to reboot my PC due to this issue every other day or
so when trying to open Chrome. When I get totally frustrated I switch to
IE or Firefox, neither of which have this waiting for cache or waiting for
app cache issue. Difficult to understand why this bug which gaging by the
internet postings is so prevalent has not yet been fixed. Should just
probably switch permanently but I like Chrome...

#60 pointed out that MSE might be the culprit. Adding Chrome's cache to the
exclusions in MSE did get rid of a LONG delay and heavy disk, cpu and
audible fan activity, that all return again when the exclusion is removed.
Only could reproduce this tentative solution on the
http://sip.ztm.kielce.pl/ site #60 lists so far though.

I did it once. My issue was definitely related to Norton.

I am experiencing this problem continuously on a new format with Windows
8.1 Professional and all of the latest drivers and updates. In my case it
seems this became very noticeable after getting upgraded to 37.0.2062.124
but may have occurred intermittently before. At random but frequent times
when I try to access a page, the browser throws a "waiting for cache"
status and all tabs stop responding including new ones that I open. Most of
the time the browser itself locks up while also freezing other applications
until I force-quit from Chrome. This happens regardless of page, including
Google itself. AMD-based PC.

I've been experiencing this off an on for over a year on my work machine.
Switching to another browser is not an option for me as our application
must support Chrome. However, I find it extremely disturbing that Chrome is
aware of this issue but apparently intends to do nothing about it.

This problem has also caused my entire operating system to hang, in
fact it
usually does. To get around the issue, I have to hard reboot my
computer and
restore where I left off when I boot back up.
That pretty much guarantees that there is something else broken, not this
bug.
Really? For me, as soon as chromium goes on one of its disk-access
rampages, the system becomes so unresponsive for so long that it might as
well have been the "entire operating system" hanging. Sometimes, if I'm
patient enough, the rampage will stop, and everything will come back and
work normally again -- at least until chromium goes on another rampage,
which usually doesn't take very long, especially if it's just finished an
earlier rampage.

I'd love to know what's happening when the disk is "spinning out of
control" (as I described it in a previous post), but it takes over the
machine so completely that I can't get any diagnostics running, or even
switch to another workspace where I might have started a diagnostic in
advance. The only chance I have of getting a diagnostic going (or switching
to an existing one) is after the rampage has stopped, and by then it's too
late, which is quite frustrating.

Is it really true that none of the chromium testers have seen this in
action? Because if they had, I'd imagine that they'd be desperate to get to
the bottom of the problem, since it's such a serious one -- one rogue
process is not supposed to make the whole machine unusable.

Comment #110 on issue 336734 by ***@gmail.com: page load hangs
with "Waiting for cache..." message
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=336734

The question of causality is clearly important. A relevant data point from
my experience is that this endless spinning only happens when I'm running
chromium, never when I'm running another browser, and never when I have
chromium open but am not using the browser. The only trigger has been (at
least for me) loading a new page on chromium. That clearly points to
chromium being at least the proximate cause of the spinning, if not the
sole cause.

Lately, in an effort to extend my time between lock-ups, I've been using an
extension called "The Great Suspender" that allows me to "suspend" tabs,
releasing their memory, when I don't need them. I've found that I can
significantly prolong the time between lock-ups by being careful to suspend
tabs I'm currently not using, and that any remaining lock-ups occur because
I've forgotten to suspend enough tabs and have several of them open,
especially ones that tend to accumulate memory usage such as GMail and
Google+. It's been a fairly successful workaround, but one I'd prefer not
to have to rely on.

Again, I would like to ask: have the chromium testers actually seen this
phenomenon, or have they yet to reproduce it?

Same problem here. Happened to me 4 months ago on my old PC icore2d,4gb
ram. I remember i had managed to delete all extensions, clear cache,
completely uninstall chrome, restart, run full registry fix with regclean
pro, reinstall. That fixed the problem for a couple of weeks, but started
again. I didn't bother the second time, I bought new PC i7,16 ram, and it
started happening again today. Weird things i noticed this time: reg clean
pro had a LOT of registry fault warnings, while a week ago none. And I use
windows only for chrome (+adblock). Also, I only have 2 extensions,which I
disabled, and when I have only 1 tab open at Google.com, I see 3 chrome
processes at windows task manager-20k,27k,38k, this seems bit too much when
i only have 1 instance of the browser with 1 tab at Google.com. I kinda
thought it was 1 process per tab/extension...
PS. I deleted the extensions and chrome processes took up 20k,31k,69,1k
memory (stable numbers). I opened a tab and closed it,naturally a chrome
process started and finished, but with 1 tab still 3 processes remain at
20k,38k,69,8k. Its as if chrome doesn't get rid of memory or something.

I have had this problem as well with Windows Vista & 2007. I'm just so mad
that in 18 mos(probably longer), google has not provided a fix or worked
with MS to figure it out or at least report on it or even admit that it is
a problem. The proof is in the thousands of posts by google users with all
kinds of system setups going back a long long while. It only ever happens
with Chrome. I like the way chrome works and have stuck with it. I've
reached the end of my patience and am moving on.

For anyone sticking with Chrome, this solution works if your rig uses an
SSD - at least until you do a reinstall (e.g. upgrading your rig).

http://www.ghacks.net/2010/10/19/how-to-change-google-chromes-cache-location-and-size/

Sooooo mad.

Comment #118 on issue 336734 by ***@gmail.com: page load hangs
with "Waiting for cache..." message
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=336734

I have this problem with Chromium 39.0.2171.19 in Gentoo Linux (AMD64). It
has gradually been getting worse. Before it worked to just clear the cache.
But now that also just spins forever and nothing happens. I have /home on
NFS and initially thought that to be the problem. But after moving the
chromium data to a local disk (not SSD) the problem came back after a few
hours. I've had similar problems before related to sqlite (at least once I
think it had do do with repeatedly failing and retying to write a too big
chunk of data).

There is a thread called Chrome_CacheThr contsantly writing to disk at ~3.8
M/s, according to iotop. (Which remings me of problems I've seen before
with sqlite.)

All activity seems to happen in an object called disk_cache. It's invoked
by the method BackendIO::ExecuteBackendOperation() from
base::debug::TaskAnnotator::RunTask().

I suspect this problem is triggered by visiting certain websites. It seems
like the write lock on the database (the one in Cache I think) is almost
always held so the database becomes almost entirely unavailable. Perhaps
because some failed write operation is constantly retried. Perhaps because
the size of some field is exceeded (like the name of some identifier being
ridiculously long). Just some ideas.

I'm also having this issue. Never happened on my laptops but only happens
on my desktop. I'm using a Crucial MX100 256GB SSD and Windows 7 Home
Premium x64. I installed Chrome x64 version and wonder if that will fix it.
This is the only program on my SSD that is having a problem.

Same problem here. Just upgraded my hard drive to an SSD and it happened
right away. Clean install of win 7 pro 64 bit on a Intel 530 SSD and the
problem started right away. Before, on my regular WD 7200 rpm hard drive it
NEVER happened. IE works just fine. It only happens on Chrome and it hangs
the whole computer for mayb a min or so and then its fine. Its been
happening every few mins. I love chrome but if the problem continues its
literally unusable.

First time I encountered this issue today. chrome.exe seizes to stop and
you can't even uninstall the browser. I had to reboot in safe mode and take
out chrome. I downloaded latest version and re-installed it but issue
continued, it doesn't even open Twitter home page. Uninstalling doesn't
seem to be quite the troubleshoot. It simply became unusable in a matter of
hours and now m back to IE!

I do not have an SSD and I get the issue at least once per day, and
sometimes repeatedly. I have a desktop running Windows 7. Did not start to
occur until around the beginning of September 2014. Before that everything
was fine.

In my case the error freezes my entire computer and I need to do a hard
reboot. In some instances, the computer will not even reboot properly (!)
and I need to do a second or even third hard reboot until the machine boots
into windows safe mode. Needless to say, I have stopped using this computer
for serious work. I have stopped using Chrome on computers I use for work.

This is a real showstopper, but it seems Google is more concerned with
spaceflight or renewable energy fantasies than getting their crappy
software working properly. Time to switch to firefox. Another switch, since
I moved off of Google Maps and gmail some months ago because of crappy
interface issues.

Do no evil? What a pile.

32GB of RAM?

Wonder if it has to do with the RAM size?

I have 16GB of RAM and have this problem occasionally myself, tho it has
reduced lately and been replaced with other "waiting for X" messages. I
would like to say that my chrome session is rather large and eats about 6GB
at start and 12GB near the time I forcibly restart it to not get Other
problems (disabling extensions has little impact on any of this). So.. I'd
say amount of RAM is not linked to this outside of maybe Chrome eating up
all of it like a gluttonous pig (which I guess would cause it indirectly).

So I had this problem for the longest time and was even getting it when
trying firefox or IE(though obviously those didn't display 'waiting for
cache'), in my case in turns out one of my harddrives(NOT my primary one
which stored the OS) was seriously wigging out and even though I
essentially didn't use it at all it was causing this issue for me. Removing
it fixed it for me, this almost 98% dosen't matter but for those curious it
was a WD10EADS.

If you're like me and getting this issue regardless of what browser you
use, try disabling the chrome cache using method 3 here:
http://christian.roy.name/blog/disable-cache-chrome.

In my case it made the freezes about 10x less frequent.

I tried turning off the cache completely (as in the message from
ferrierc). Either I was very unlucky or it made the problem worse.

My impression is that it doesn't really have anything to do with the local
machine, but instead has something to do with the activity tracking and/or
page caching that Google is doing.

I've never had the problem happen when I was on low-volume sites... only
high volume sites (Google Search, Google Images, news sites, etc.).
Especially high volume sites with lots of images.

Well I had been testing Google Chrome Canary (Alpha Build - 64 bit) which
still ran into this "Waiting for cache' bug for the last 8 months. I ran
regular 32 bit Stable Build and the 64-bit Alpha Build

I will try testing the stable build of Google Chrome 64-bit as well.

It may be confusing to read this.

Yes, same problem. Freaking thing hangs and I spend hours like many of you
have. Even installed new OS, deleted extensions etc. Have to switch to a
different browser after many hours of wasted time! You'd think the 'smart'
people at big G would have this figured out by now but guess they just
rather lose users of their browser!

HEY TRY THIS! DISABLE WINDOWS DEFENDER! Seems to run find now. Smooth as
silk but will have to keep testing it. I'll update later if it goes bad.

To disable WD:
1) click start button
2) in box type services
3) scroll down and find it.
4) right click select properties
5) in drop down box select disable.

Great. Never did like WD. Always other free 3rd party apps.

Comment #150 on issue 336734 by ***@gmail.com: page load hangs
with "Waiting for cache..." message
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=336734

I had this same issue for bout a year and finally managed to solve it (for
good). It seems to be caused by several separate issues, but the rootcause
(chrome going on a disk-usage rampage, swallowing everything up) is the
same. In my case, it was narrowed down to be either faulty sata cables or
bad SSD firmware. I've switched the ssd sata cable with the hdd sata cable
to ensure no issue is with the cable. Then, when it didnt fix a thing, I
want to go for the SSD firmware (I got Kingston). To load the new firmware
I first had to run in AHCI-mode. This is a BIOS-setting, but be aware. You
often also need the AHCI-driver for your mainboard. So make sure you
install that too. The next issue is that the AHCI on windows is disabled if
you didn't use it on install. To fix this, you need to boot the pc in safe
mode the first time you use it, but atleast windows 8.1 refuses that. So
this is what I did:

1: make sure the mainboard AHCI-driver is installed.
2: run command prompt in admin mode and enter "BCDEdit /set {current}
safeboot minimal". This will force the pc to start in safe mode.
3: reboot and enter the BIOS to enable AHCI mode and reboot again. If you
don't get into windows at all at this point, simply set the BIOS back to
IDE-mode.
4: once in safemode go again to command prompt (run as admin) and type
in "BCDEdit /deletevalue {current} safeboot"
5: reboot the computer to enter normal mode.
6: now run the SSD firmware update tool.

note: I was so excited to finally manage to get the pc running in AHCI-mode
I forgot to test if that alone was the solution. So even if you can't find
a SSD firmware update for you SSD, you could try just getting AHCI to work.

I don't have the "waiting for cache" hang, but I do get many "waiting for"
alerts, including apis, adblocker, many more that allow me to see only part
of the page, won't scroll far, until all the waiting fors are done. I tried
the same page on Safari and it loaded and scrolled instantly. Must be a
Chrome issue.

https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=336734

I've had "waiting for cache" appear after changing network state e.g.
moving networks, disconnecting/connecting to a VPN, after the laptop has
been sleeping for a while. It's not disk IO related, I think it's
something cached in the network stack. I did get a stack once or twice but
I've lost them, I'll try and grab one if/when this happens again. This was
on Windows, but I've also seen it happen on Mac.

Look at the amount of comments the last month.

You staff at Google are the laziest fucking CUNTS and in no way do you
deserve a job.

Google. FIX THIS FUCKING BUG. You make BILLIONS. Throw whatever it takes at
this and fix it.

I hate fucking Firefox. My porn doesn't play properly in it, it's a bloated
sack of fuck. But compared to having my entire PC lock up multiple times a
day because Google updated something that started causing this around
September, I'll put up with the shit of Firefox.

"Each comment triggers notification emails." GOOD. FUCKING GOOD. YOU LAZY
FUCKS NEED TO DO YOUR JOB AND FIX THIS SHIT THAT HAS THOUSANDS AFFECTED FOR
MONTHS.

My latency problems came back and I've noticed that it might be more WIFI
related. If I'm connected to my router with an Ethernet cable and have WIFI
turned off chrome seems to run fine. I plan to upgrade my router/WIFI and
I think that will correct the issue.

I never had this problem on my kingston ssd until I swapped my SSD to
crucial. I think its related to the SSD and there is no firmware update for
my MX 100 SSD.

I found that this problem occurred for me when my harddrive was dying (e.g.
problems copying files with Windows and Ubuntu). From reading above, it
seems Chrome isn't very tolerant to disk read issues.

The problem went away when I changed my drive to AHCI mode (and improved
system performance).

You'll probably also need to tweak registry entries if you're running
Windoze.

For me, switching to AHCI mode fixed it (but I had protected chrome.exe
with EMET before that).
Interestingly I have an FX8320 as well - maybe that is the source?

To help the devs more, here is my system:

I have had this same issue since about September 2014. Happens every time I
start Chrome. I am running 64 bit Windows 7. I do not have a solid state
drive. I am hard-wired to my internet connection with an Ethernet cable. It
hangs all of my running apps for 10 - 30 seconds every time. I 'solve' it
temporarily by closing Chrome. As soon as I do, everything runs fine again.
This is a Chrome issue.
