New issue 322804 by ***@gmail.com: Flash player gets corrupted when
chaging tabs while using it (ex. playing a YouTube video).
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=322804

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like
Gecko) Chrome/31.0.1650.57 Safari/537.36
Chrome Version (from the about:version page): Version 31.0.1650.57 Debian
7.2 (235101)
Is this the most recent version: I don't know.
OS + version: Debian 7.1 (Wheezy)
CPU architecture (32-bit / 64-bit): 64 bit.
Window manager: kwin (KDE).
URLs (if relevant): http://www.youtube.com/
Behavior in Linux Firefox: Can see the video after switching out and back
to the tab when I play the video with flash.
Behavior in Windows Chrome (if you have access to it): Can see the video
after switching out and back to the tab when I play the video with flash.

What steps will reproduce the problem?

1. Open www.youtube.com and another web page in a new tab.
2. Play a video, and then switch to the new tab.
3. Return to the tab where you opened You Tube and started to play a video.

What is the expected result?

To see the video playing and to control it.

What happens instead?
Just a black square in the place when the flash video belongs, with audio,
but no video, no buttons, can't pause the video nor stop it.

Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot
and backtrace if possible.

Tested in KDE using plasma-desktop and using Be-shell.
Tested in KDE with and without kwin compositing active.
Nvidia privative drivers 304.88
Flash version: 11.2.202.261
This issue happens after an upgrade, I hadn't it before.

I have changed the flash plugin to the pepper flash and yes, I don't have
the problem anymore.

but the problem still looks to be related to Chromium... Iceweasel (the
non-branded firefox in Debian) uses the adobe flash player 11.2 r202
without any problem.

This Issue affects me too. I can only second what has already been stated.
Although I'm on Arch Linux here, the symptoms are the same. After switching
tabs the player goes black and I have to reload the page to display any
video again. Sound is fine though. It was ok with 31.0.1650.57, and flash
works fine in Firefox here too.

* Chromium 31.0.1650.63 (238485) from default Arch extra repo
* Adobe Flash Player - Version: 11.2 r202

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=322804

I can confirm exactly the same issue. I am on Arch using default repos.

chromium-30.0.1599.114 - works fine
chromium-31.0.1650.57 - black screen issue
chromium-31.0.1650.63 - black screen issue

flash: flashplugin 11.2.202.327-1

The issue is intermittent but frequent enough that youtube is unwatchable.
It is not only switching tabs, it can be also scrolling down that triggers
it.

The video runs and when switching from tab to tab you can see it to come on
for about a second before turning black.

Unfortunately, i am unable to reproduce this issue on Latest
Stable#31.0.1650.63 on Linux Ubuntu 12.04.

Is there any wait time required for this video to repro the black screen?
and this is specific to particular video?

Thank you.

No, there is no wait time. It's immediate. Also, it is not specific to any
Flash video.

Make sure to not use Pepper Flash as that causes no issues (on my end at
least).

The issue also happens in Hulu, I beleieve.

I have created an extension that provides a work-around for this bug. It
adds a button to the omnibox on YouTube, which upon click shows the player
again.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/fix-youtube-black-screen/kncceefgpneijaklfkdibaoidhkiblpi

It works by flashing the visibility property of the <embed> element that
displays the video.

Same black-box problem here: it seems like this only happens if you have
multiple tabs opened in the window which contains the youtube tab.

Comment #34 on issue 322804 by ***@gmail.com: Flash player gets
corrupted when chaging tabs while using it (ex. playing a YouTube video).
http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=322804

The issue is hard to reproduce, but after managing to reproduce it on a
fresh Chrome profile (using a permutation of refreshing YouTube, opening
new incognito windows, initiating a GPU process - not sure which one caused
the bug), I tried the following:

1. Disabled Flash
2. Refreshed YouTube
3. Enabled Flash
4. Refreshed YouTube
5. Reproduced bug (switch to next tab, switch back)

Then, I disabled NPAPI Flash and enabled PPAPI Flash. The bug was not
reproducable any more (i.e. gone).

So, it seems that there are two work-arounds for the bug:

1. Replace NPAPI Flash with Pepper Flash

OR

2. Install
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/fix-youtube-black-screen/kncceefgpneijaklfkdibaoidhkiblpi
and click on the button whenever YouTube turns black.

wget
https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb
ar vx google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb
tar -xJf *.lzma
cp -r google-chrome/opt/google/chrome/PepperFlash /usr/lib/
chmod +x /usr/lib/PepperFlash/libpepflashplayer.so

then I modified CHROMIUM_FLAGS in /etc/chromium/default:

CHROMIUM_FLAGS="--ppapi-flash-path=/usr/lib/PepperFlash/libpepflashplayer.so
--ppapi-flash-version=11.9.900.117"

Therefore restart chromium, go to "chrome://plugins", enable PPAPI, disable
NPAPI and yabba dabba doo.
Verbose, but works.

confirmed for me too, running Version 31.0.1650.63 Built on Debian 7.2,
running on Debian 7.3 (238485) (AMD64) with Flash 11.2.202.310 , KDE
4.8.4, . Also, #10 is right about the fact that dragging the tab out to a
new window somewhat fixes the issue (at least one doesn't have to reload to
continue viewing the clip).

Some problem:

-Arch Linux
-Chromium 33.0.1750.152 (256984)
-KDE 4.12

Another solution that works to drag the tab out of the window it's in so
that youtube sits in its own tab in its own window and the hidden video
will show again.

I may be mistaken but I'm fairly sure I didn't have this problem before I
upgraded my GPU from an ATI one using to an Nvidia one. Can anyone else
confirm if they're using an AMD or NVidia GPU? (Both using proprietary
drivers)

I switch back to the YouTube tab.

Chrome 35 does no longer support NPAPI plugins, including NPAPI flash.
The reported bug does not occur with the PPAPI Flash player, so I'm closing
this issue.

If you're using Chromium on ArchLinux, you can get the PPAPI plugin from
AUR, chromium-pepper-flash
(https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/chromium-pepper-flash/).
